September 2009 That Reminds Me

Summer of ’09

As I have for the last seven years, I began my daughter’s school year with my own brand new three-ring binder.

Throughout the next nine-and-a-half months, I’ll fill the binder with memorable art work, sample spelling lists, a few tests, homework assignments and book reports, school concert programs, and report cards. I started compiling these notebooks when my daughter was in the first grade to corral all the papers she brought home each afternoon. Now, she enjoys looking back through these books and marveling at how her drawing and handwriting skills have improved, and reminiscing about classroom activities.

Though her school year memories are preserved to the best of my ability, I falter when it comes to chronicling the summers. Photos and postcards from vacations are still waiting to be put into scrapbooks and I haven’t been journaling summertime high points like I should.

Well, a few weeks ago, while relaxing in front of the TV, I decided to make a list of some of the things that happened this summer. I know years from now I’ll want to remember that Erika had her first real job in July — albeit non-paying — as a volunteer art camp assistant. When I look back on our family’s pre-back-to-school jaunt to King’s Island, perhaps I’ll be able to laugh at the fact that it rained the entire day! I’ll remember the fun we had at the State Fair shamelessly stuffing ourselves with deep-fried goodies.
This was the summer that Michael Jackson’s death dominated the media, and those of us older than 45 reminisced about the Apollo 11 moon-landing’s 40th anniversary. Cap-and-trade legislation and health reform were (are) key issues, as was the H1N1 virus and how severe its effects may be come fall.

As a die-hard Harry Potter fan, I was overjoyed to see the long-awaited sixth movie of the series. I challenged myself to read as many books as I could this summer (six) and work out on our Wii Fit system at least five times a week.

By jotting down these summertime memories, I realized though these past three months seemed to fly by (as summers always do), a lot actually happened. Many things on my list are just simple little remembrances — things like the titles of our favorite summer songs — but I’m looking forward to reading my list years from now and recalling what the summer of ’09 meant to me.
