January 2010 That Reminds Me
Happy New Year
by Emily Schilling Editor
I love new beginnings, fresh starts, and having a chance to wipe the slate clean and move forward. Jan. 1 provides us with a whole new set of 364 days, neatly labeled 2010, for us to enjoy. Of course, some days will be more enjoyable than others. But nonetheless, they are all gifts, and they are all ours to discover.
Every year, I make a resolution which I attempt to keep. Most of the time, I do fairly well at following through on it — that is until midyear. At that point, I’m usually preoccupied with whatever else is taking precedence in my life right then. Quite frankly, I often forget about what was so important to me on Jan. 1 that I decided to make a resolution about it. So, ultimately, I guess, I don’t follow through on my promises!
Well, that won’t happen in 2010! I’ve actually been contemplating this year’s resolution for several months. I want to challenge myself mentally, to learn more, to give my not-as-nimble brain cells a workout. I want to learn another language!
I’m not 100 percent sure which one at this point. I’m strongly considering brushing up on my French. I took six years of it in school, but that was many moons ago and, regrettably, I didn’t continue to use the language. Therefore, I’ve forgotten much of it. C’est la vie!
I’ve always wanted to learn Spanish, and then there’s also Italian. I’m planning to listen to those learn-another-language CDs in my car. That way, I can multi-task, which is how I normally do things. While I’m driving, I can talk to myself. No big deal. I do that all the time already! Maybe soon, though, I’ll be able to talk to myself bilingually! (If any of you have tried Rosetta Stone-type programs, let me know. Drop me an e-mail at ec@indremcs.org and tell me if they work — or don’t work!)
If my foray into another language works, I may go on a learning kick this year. I’ve regretted not reading the classics back when I was in school — maybe this year I’ll read Bronte and Shakespeare. I’ve always wanted to learn how to knit; I might give that a try. I’ve never understood baseball. Who knows? Maybe I’ll attempt to learn what ERA means.
Let’s all resolve to live it up this year and end this decade on a good note. Experience life to its fullest and cherish each day. Find a reason to smile at least once each day, even though it may not be apparent why you should. Count your blessings often, and you’ll realize it truly is a Happy New Year!
