Lincoln events celebrate bicentennial
Here are some upcoming 2009 events celebrating Abraham Lincoln’s bicentennial.
Feb. 12 — Lincoln Bicentennial Birthday Bash, Indianapolis (Marion) — Indiana State House. Lincoln appearance, Indiana Lincoln-related displays, educational contests awards program and Lincoln legacy projects highlighted. 888-444-9252
Feb. 12 — Lincoln Bicentennial Birthday Celebration, Lincoln City (Spencer) — Lincoln Boyhood National Memorial. Wreath laying ceremony at the grave site of Nancy Hanks, guest speaker Dr. James Madison, a professor at Indiana University, and an open house. 2 pm (CT). 812-937-4541.
Feb. 12-May 9 — “With Malice Toward None:” The Abraham Lincoln Bicentennial Exhibition, Washington, D.C. — Library of Congress. The exhibit will chart Lincoln’s growth from prairie lawyer to preeminent statesman and address the monumental issues he faced including slavery and race, dissolution of the Union and the Civil War. Feb. 19 — Boxley Lecture Series: President Abraham Lincoln Interpreter, Sheridan (Hamilton) — Sheridan Middle School Auditorium. Considered one of the nation’s foremost Lincoln actors, Fritz Klein now serves as the official Lincoln interpreter for the National Parks Service. 6 pm. No admission charge. 317-758-5845
April 14 — Abraham Lincoln Funeral Reenactment, Rockport (Spencer) — Courthouse. A reproduction of Lincoln’s casket will lay in state in the courthouse. A wreath laying ceremony will begin at noon. Noon-midnight. 812-489-0365; www.ThinkLincoln.org.
April 18 — Presidential Ball, Bedford (Lawrence) — Lawrence County Historical Society. This gala will recreate a Victorian-era ball with period music, dancers, costumes and Civil War encampment. 812-279-3561.
June 12 — Abraham Lincoln Bicentennial Plaza, Lincoln City (Spencer) — Lincoln State Park. A new public art piece will be unveiled. Designed to honor the years Lincoln spent in Indiana, the circular plaza will be dotted with limestone pedestals signifying key moments in young Abe’s life. A larger-than-life bust of Lincoln will hold center stage in the plaza designed by two Indiana artists.
